Night Fragrances - Azzaro Wanted By Night EDP

Four new night-themed fragrances recently landed on my desk. While I can’t vouch for the marketing claims peculiar to the genre (irresistible attraction, confidence in a bottle, glamorous parties until dawn, etc), I can tell you whether the following are worth sniffing out or not. Where known, I have listed the perfumer/s in brackets for these night fragrances.

“I can’t vouch for the claims peculiar to the genre (irresistible attraction, confidence in a bottle, glamorous parties until dawn.”

AZZARO WANTED BY NIGHT EDP (QUENTIN BISCH AND MICHEL GIRARD)

There’s more to this woody-oriental-spicy fragrance than its clichéd advertising suggests. While the original was nothing special, this EDP has plenty going for it. There’s no missing the warm opening of cinnamon, with yellow mandarin in the background, before notes of red cedar, incense, cumin and tobacco take charge. Quality stuff! R1 080 for 50ml and R1 410 for 100ml.

* For this night fragrances post,  this is my official video debut. Very basic for now.

BENTLEY FOR MEN ABSOLUTE EDP (MICHEL ALMAIRAC)

Launched in 2014, but only available in South Africa now, Bentley For Men Absolute is the luxury car-maker’s take on one of the most precious materials in perfumery, oud. Ginger, pink pepper and olibanum open proceedings, and then there’s a woody whammy of sandalwood, papyrus and Atlas cedar notes. When the oud comes through, it’s not overpowering, but sensual and smooth. The overall effect is one of smoky sophistication. R1 245 for 100ml.

JACQUES BOGART SILVER SCENT MIDNIGHT EDT

The latest addition to the Silver Scent line is sweet-ish at first. Give it time to settle and it’s all aromatic notes of cardamom, Russian sage, artimesia and nutmeg, with a hint of orange blossom. It’s an unabashed “notice me” performer and, at roughly half the price of designer fragrances, offers great value for money. R569 for 100ml.

ISSEY MIYAKE NUIT D’ISSEY NOIR ARGENT EDP (DOMINIQUE ROPION)

For those who still equate Issey Miyake fragrances with citrus freshness and aquatics, the Nuit range proves that the Japanese label can deliver a respectable dose of woody spiciness that warrants attention. A brief dash of grapefruit gives way to notes of nutmeg and pepper. I can then pick up notes of patchouli, olibanum and leather. The listed vetiver note (I am very partial to it) proved elusive, but that’s ok, because there’s still enough to intrigue here. R1 375 for 100ml.

  1. I will watch the video once I’m back home with better Internet (and computer), but only because you made it: I’m an old school and I prefer written word to a spoken one (and static pictures 🙂 ).
And I will definitely try the last perfume: I haven’t liked anything from this brand since Le Feu Light, but in your description this one sounds interesting.

I look forward to your comments.
